Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope Review

Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope are perhaps the best value of all spotting scopes.

After owning and putting a Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope through an extreme field test for over 4 years, I thought it is time for a Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope Review.  I have the Nikon ProStaff 16-48X65 mm Spotting Scope and have access to the 20-60X82 mm Model, which my brother-in-law has and I have used on multiple occasions.  They are very similar in looks with the exception size.

Overall Price/Quality Score: 10 out of 10

I originally bought the Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope without actually ever holding it.  I basically bought it trusting Nikon’s history of producing high quality products at a value price, as well as taking the word of many Nikon ProStaff spotting scope reviews that I read, nearly all of which were positive.  Upon receiving the spotting scope, I was more than happy with the end result. I feel more than comfortable suggesting this scope as a product that is well worth the price, and then some.

Optics

Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope Review

You can expect clear, crisp images if the glassing conditions are such.

I was very pleasantly surprised the first time I looked through the eye piece of the Nikon Prostaff Spotting Scope.  The optics are second to none for a scope in its price range.  In fact, when placed next to a spotting scope that retails right about $1000, the images of the Nikon ProStaff 20-60x82mm were not that far off.  The difference between the Nikon ProStaff 20-60x82mm and the $1000 spotting scope was even less noticeable.

Light Gathering:

Both the Nikon ProStaff 65mm and 82mm Spotting Scopes capture a lot of light for value priced spotting scopes.  As can be expected, the bigger objective of the 82mm definitely out shined the 65mm in low light conditions, but even the 65mm provided me with better images than I was expecting after using several other spotting scopes in similar price ranges.  During times of good light, the difference in brightness was not much to speak of between the 65mm and 82mm.

Magnification / Zoom

The mechanic of the zoom eye piece are very fluid, easy to turn, and feel like they are built with quality in mind.  This is very important as the zoom gets a lot of use.

As for the quality of the images in relation to the zoom, the Nikon Prostaff exceeded my expectations here as well.  The 82mm, with its 20-60 power variable zoom can bring an object right in close with little loss of crispness depending on the conditions of lighting and clearness.  Of course, if the conditions are not ideal, you wont get a perfect image of the object, but both these scopes do not make it any worse.  Typically value priced scopes, anything under $400 or $500, loose much more quality than does the Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope.  My guess though is that if the 65mm zoomed much more, you would begin to see a decline in the optical clarity and things would get grainy very quick.

Focus Knob

A focus knob should be easy to turn and provide quick, yet fine tuned focusing.  The Nikon Prostaff Spotting Scope’s focus knob does just that.  Both models are very efficient at getting you to the focal point, and then are easy to fine tune to get you a focused, clear image.

Craftsmanship

Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope

The Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope comes with a very handy view-thru-case that adds extra protection. Unlike some, this view-thru-case does not hinder the spotting scope at all.

With the Nikon Prostaff Spotting Scope in your hands, you can tell it is not  high dollar European Optic quality of any sort.  It is quite light weight for it’s size, and just does not give a feel of a super sturdy spotting scope.  That being said, I have owned my Nikon Prostaff 16-48x65mm Spotting Scope for over 4 years now and have had no problems whatsoever with the quality in craftsmanship and heard no reviews or reports of anybody else having any problems.  My brother-in-law got his 82mm Prostaff Spotting Scope and has had no problems as well. I feel that this is more than enough time to give a Nikon Prostaff Spotting Scope Review, as I have used the scope in about every condition imaginable. I have yet to see any leaks, fog, or interior problems.

The fact is that these spotting scopes are made with mass production techniques, over seas, and with inexpensive parts.  The thing is though that the parts are of a quality make and design, and they hold up well.  The overseas and mass production is what keeps the price so low.

Warranty

Nikon covers its sport optics with an exceptional warranty and top it off with great customer service.  Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scopes are fully covered by a 25 year  Nikon No-Fault Repair or Replacement Policy.  That’s right, Nikon will fix or replace the product regardless of what happens.  They do however say they may charge $10 plus return shipping to fix items that are not covered by the warranty.  I do not know what would classify as not being covered under the policy, but I would not sweat over $10

Price Comparison

When compared to other spotting scopes in the price range of the Nikon ProStaff, the Nikon is definitely the best.  You will have a hard time finding a spotting scope that will beat them as for as their size to weight to quality ratio.  Though they may look like they are of good size, in all actuality they compare quite closely, and even better than most all around.

Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scopes: 16-48x68mm VS 20-60x82mm

The right model of the two for your needs will depend on a few factors: price, size, lighting.

After having the chance to review both Nikon Prostaff Spotting Scopes, I have determined the 65mm in by far the best option for me.  Though I spend a lot of time glassing from the vehicle, and much of the time in low light conditions, it is not uncommon for me to throw my spotting scope into my backpack and take it with me all day long.  For this reason, the 20-48x65mm model is the best for me.  If you are willing to accept a little more weight, length, and girth, then the 82mm spotting scope will be your best bet.

Digiscoping With the Nikon ProStaff

I have been incredibly amazed at the quality of video and images I have been able to capture with my average camera and Nikon Prostaff Spotting Scope.  I am mostly into deer, elk and other large species of wildlife, but I have also see some great videos and photographs taken of birds with the same setup.

Digiscoping with the Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope

Here is a video of a Mule Deer Buck I was able to shoot some digiscope footage of using my Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope from about 400-500 yards away.  I did not have camera-spotting scope mount at the time, so the video is a little shaky but  still of good quality.

Final Verdict:  Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scope Review:

The Verdict is in: The Nikon ProStaff Spotting Scopes are the best value I have found for under $500.  You simply wont find anything better than the quality and warranty of these products.  For a great starter spotting scope, or for anybody that is on a budget and looking for value, then this will be a hard spotting scope  to beat.
